Couture wedding gowns are certainly coming back into fashion (if they ever went away), and many brides-to-be are inspired by the dresses that are immortalised on the silver screen. From romantic comedies to adventure to science fiction, couture wedding gowns have been featured in films of every genre. While the weddings may be make-believe, the dresses are not, and they can inspire brides-to-be and stir up the world of bridal fashion - garnering both criticism and high praise. Here are some famous movies that have featured well-loved (or loathed) couture wedding gowns.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011)
Inarguably the biggest silver screen wedding of 2011, the nuptials of Bella Swan and her vampire love Edward Cullen sent ripples through the world of bridal fashion. Mere days after Breaking Dawn Part 1 hit the screens, an imitation version of the Carolina Herrera dress went on sale in bridal stores. The silk dress featured long sleeves with lace details, and a cut out illusion back with a line of buttons down its length. The film's producers at Summit Entertainment anticipated a craze over the dress - valued at $35,000 - so they collaborated with bridal retailer Alfred Angelo to recreate replicas which fans can get their hands on for a more affordable $799.
Bride Wars (2009)Brides-to-be got a double dose of couture wedding gowns during this chick flick which centres around every bride's worst nightmare - getting married on the same day as your best friend. Characters Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) battled it out with very different, but equally gorgeous, gowns made by designer of designers, Vera Wang. Emma's elegant taffeta, fishtail gown featured a stunning asymmetrical off shoulder, whereas Liv's strapless dress was flattered by a princess tulle skirt.
Ghosts of Girlfriends' Past (2009)
In this romantic comedy starring Jennifer Garner, Connor is a notorious, womanising bachelor haunted by three ghosts of jilted ex girlfriends. In the much-anticipated wedding scene, Jennifer Garner, as Jenny, struts down the aisle in a stunning strapless Manuel Mota lace gown that spawned a spate of copy-cat designs.
Sex and the City the Movie (2008)
This was one of the most anticipated movie weddings of the decade, with heavy speculation over what the fashionista bride would wear. Putting an end to the shroud of secrecy, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) stepped out donned in a champagne silk/satin gown by Vivienne Westwood for her marriage to Mr Big. The dress featured a sweetheart neckline, built-in corset, and a voluminous puffball skirt. Marley and Me (2008)
In this hilarious comedy, Jennifer Aniston, as her character Jennifer, is respendent on her wedding day in a satin organza gown from Florida based Carolina Boulton Couture. Like many of the silver screen wedding dresses that went before it, replicas of this gown were made for retail almost before the film became a box-office smash.
The influence of couture wedding gowns in film is irrefutable, and hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2012 the National Museum of Costume in Scotland showcased a host of glamorous bridal gowns that were featured in film and TV productions. The Marriage in the Movies exhibition included gowns worn by Keira Knightly in The Duchess, and Joely Richardson in the drama Wallis & Edward. The costumes were used to illustrate the development of the wedding gown since the 18th century, but they also illustrated the power of fashion in film to sway trends in the dynamic wedding industry.
